Cru Beaujolais- an affordable pleasure

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One of the affordable pleasures I have enjoyed this year is getting to know some of the Cru Beaujolais Appellations. Unlike many French Crus, Beaujolais Crus are much more affordable and give you the opportunity to experience some of the best of a wine region without having to pay triple digit prices.

Some of my favorites are shown here. Cote de Bouilly (grapes grown on the side of a Volcano),  Morgon Cote de Py and Julienas The  Cote de Brouilly wines I have tried have had a distinct finish that I like and that I find on wines where the soil is noted as being volcanic. The Morgon seem to be good examples of wines that are earthy in a good way (this is something they are noted for) and the Julienas I have tried have had a good berry note and stronger tannin in the finish. If you try some of these or some other Crus let us which ones and what you think of them.

if you are looking for an importer with a good reputation, Kemit Lynch has a line of Cru Beaujolais that multiple reputable wine merchants have recommended to me.

Visit Royal Rabbit Vineyards for small business Saturday 11/26- enjoy a free tasting for 2 and complimentary wine glasses when you purchase 2 bottles of wine. Also visit us at 4 for pre-holiday pot luck wine pairing.

Bring your own dish to the tasting room at 4PM 11/26. Roy, our winemaker, will help pair a wine for you or just come with the recipe of what you are making and he can talk you through a wine for your dish. We like to participate as well. This year Roy is trying a new recipe, Dried Cherry and Miso Braised Short Ribs to see if we want to use it for our holiday dinner.

For us, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day are always about Turkey but Christmas Eve dish in our house is always beef. It used to be beef soup. That tradition began with Roy’s grandmother who never knew when the men in her family would return from shopping on Christmas Eve and soup could simmer for a long time and heat up quickly. We kept the tradition for many years; but at some point Linda got tired of beef soup and we went to other beef like Beef in Red wine , Beef in Blue Cheese sauce and Ported Pot Roast.
Hope to see you Saturday.
